Pale Blue Dot
This is one of my favorite Carl Sagan clips. It is from his partial reading of his book of the same name, and for me it really puts into perspective (about as much as is humanly possible) the size and scale of the Universe, and how little the space is that we actually occupy within it.
One of the things he points out in the clip (well, all of them) is absolutely true and strikes me the most is that this is the only planet we have that we are able to live on so far, and any other ones we could go to short of the barren ones around our own solar system would still be too far away at the moment to be of any use to us. I agree we really should be treating our planet with more respect and thoughtfulness of it’s future, even if we as individuals won’t be around to see what state it will be in from our irresponsible behavior towards it.
Carl Sagan is one of our personal heroes, he has inspired a lot of the music we write (even if it isn’t nearly as smart as he was about it) and I think we share his enthusiastic spirit towards Space, Knowledge, and Humans being happy and living well together. That’s why a lot of his stuff will probably end up here in some form or other.
